Situated
in the sylvan surroundings of Bangalore, flanked by the golf course
on the one side and overlooking Bangalore’s major land mark,
the Vidhan Soudha, Sophia High School is one of the finest examples
of premier English education in the city. Founded in Jan. 1949,
Sophia is enriched by a synergy of charisms of two saintly religious
women; St Madeline Sophie Barat, and St. Julie Billiart, the Foundress
of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart and the Sisters of Notre Dame
respectively.
The
philosophy of education in Sophia is that all students be
recognized as individuals with a right to learn and evolve
academically and personally in a supportive environment .While
striving for excellence in academics, we also seek to impart
a strong sense of personal integrity and fundamental human
values to our students through our educational principles
and through the role models- the staff themselves. We believe
that we are responsible for demonstrating and promoting the
qualities of an educated person which include wisdom, competence,
compassion, sense of well-being, and quest for peace and justice.
Consequently, we send forth young women with profound capacity
for self giving and sensitivity to respond empathetically
to the social realities of their times.
The
seeds of excellence sown at an early age at Sophia finds fruition
in forming celebrities like the “wonder girl in Indian
swimming” Nisha Millet at the age of 15, and her sister,
Reshma Millet, Mrs.Menaka Gandhi and Mr. Vijay Mallya, to
mention a few of her alumni. Sophia considers it her privilege
to serve the less privileged of the society particularly the
mentally challenged children in her Opportunity School. We
also undertake social action out reach programmes, like working
with the street childrens’s home in Chamrajpet, interacting
with the women inmates of the central jail, spending a day
in rural schools, helping needy children through interact
activities and visiting the aged and orphans in their homes.
